Tributes paid to late Limerick radio stalwart and much loved DJ

TRIBUTES have been paid to a Limerick radio stalwart and much loved DJ following his passing this week. 

John Moloney, Dr John, who “spent his entire working life behind the microphone”, passed away on February 20 at University Hospital Limerick. 

Mr Moloney is well-known in Limerick for his contribution to pirate radio, having broadcasted with many of the stations including Raidio Luimni and Radio Limerick One, according to good friend George Lee. 

“John was one of the gentlemen of the business,” Mr Lee said. 

“John was outgoing, he was fun and he was everybody’s friend.” 

“Back in day, John would have been one of the recognised DJs in the city. He would have done a lot of disco work and played with the Wise Guys Band.” 

“He was around the entertainment business in Limerick for as long as I can remember.” 

Mr Moloney, formerly of Abbey Court, Ballykeefe, also presented Drivetime” on Tipperary Mid-West Radio for more than 13 years. 

“He was a wonderful presenter who lived for the airwaves, having spent his entire working life behind the microphone in Limerick and Tipperary,” the station said in a statement. 

“John was larger than life. He had an enormous personality and brought great life, fun and happiness to our lives.”

“Our deepest sympathies go to John’s children Fintan, Darren and Ciara, their mother Eileen, John’s siblings and extended family.” 

“We are heartbroken, John. We love you and will miss you so much. Rest in peace, our dear friend.” 

Mr Moloney is survived by his wife Eileen and children Fintan, Darren and Ciara. 

Reposing at Thompsons Funeral Home on Sunday from 5.30pm to 7.00pm followed by removal to St. Paul’s Church, Dooradoyle. 

Requiem Mass on Monday at 11am with burial afterwards in Castlemungret Cemetery;House private.
