GARDAI in Limerick are advising motorists to keep an eye on their cars and not to leave them unsupervised when defrosting them during the current cold snap.

Divisional crime prevention officer Sergeant Ber Leetch says at least one car was stolen last year when the owner returned inside her home while the car was running.

“She went into her house to get some warm water and when she returned to her car, it had been stolen. Of course cars need to be defrosted so turn on your car but remain with it until the windows are completely clear and it is safe to drive or buy yourself some de-icer and an ice scraper and be prepared for the cold and frosty mornings,” she said.

“Under no circumstances should you leave your car unattended, even for a short time unless it is securely locked,” she added.
