WEST Limerick is well on the way to having a very merry Christmas this year with all manner of events lined up to celebrate the season.

Music is kicking off the traditional Christmas season this Friday night when Red Hurley will be the star guest in the church concert in Shanagolden where the Holy Trinity Abbey Choir from Adare will also perform.

Christmas Lights have already gone up and on in Abbeyfeale, in Templeglantine, in Shanagolden, in Castletownconyers and in Askeaton but Newcastle West is sticking steadfastly with tradition.

The big switch-on of the town lights will take place in the Square, Newcastle West this Saturday evening when Santa Claus and his elves will emerge from the Desmond Castle at 5pm.

Saturday will also mark the first of several visits by Santa Claus to the castle. He will be found there on December, 15, 16, 20 and 22 and tickets for the visits can be secured at Hayes Shop in the Square.

Meanwhile, communities in both Adare and Broadford are getting ready to host their Live Crib on Sunday, December 16. The event in Adare has been ongoing for the past 20 years or so and will run throughout the day. The Live Crib in Broadford is being organised by the Broadford Development Association and will take place after 9.30am Mass on December 16. It will be followed by a Christmas Market in the local hall on the same morning.

A Christmas Party organised by the Let’s Fight Cancer Mid-West group of women takes place in the Longcourt House Hotel, Newcastle West this Saturday, December 8.

This Sunday, also, a Christmas Charity Walk in aid of Milford Care Centre gets underway at 12pm from the church in Ashford, and will launch the new Ashford Woodland Loop.

Meanwhile, Liam O’Mahony of the Great Southern Trail Group reminds people that their annual Christmas Walk will take place on Thursday, December 27, starting from the public carpark in Abbeyfeale between 12.30 and 1.30pm.

A coffee morning will take place in Leen’s Hotel, Abbeyfeale this Friday at 10.30. It’s a fund-raiser to pay for the Christmas Lights in the town.
