GARDAI in Limerick have issued a warning in relation to so-called ‘Romance Scams’ which have become commonplace.

“A romance scam is where a person pretends to be interested in a romantic relationship with somebody who they intend cheating money from,” said Sergeant Ber Leetch.

“It usually takes place on online dating websites, but these scammers can often use social media or email to make contact too,” she added.

Those caught up in such scams should not feel embarrassed, should stop all contact and should report the matter gardai.

In addition to contacting gardai, victims are urged to alert the site where the scammer first made contact.

“Let them know the scammer’s profile name and any other details that may help stop others being scammed,” said Sgt Leetch.
