WILLIE Conway is one of the founding members of Bruff RFC, started by himself and Nicholas Cooke in the 1969-1970 season.
On Saturday, Willie stood watching as 150 girls tore up the turf in his beloved Kilballyowen Park. Willie couldn’t have been happier to see the club being utilised to its full potential on a Saturday afternoon.
The Ten2Teen Tournament, the first girls tournament of its kind in the area, came about as Virginia RFC wanted somewhere to come “on tour”. While the Bruff girls’ coaches wanted to raise awareness of girls rugby both within the club and further afield.
To say that both were achieved is an understatement. Virginia brought teams at U-10, U-13 and U-15 and Bruff matched them. Fethard RFC also came with U-10s and U-13s while St Mary’s/UL Bohs, Shannon, Nenagh all travelled with a mixture of U-13 and U-15 teams.
The Munster Association of Referees provided the officials which added enormously to the occasion. The kids were delighted with the arrival of the Spinnies from Spin South West and bouncy castles and sumo suits, which were still to be seen waddling around the pitch at 10pm.
The afternoon started with a giant warm-up run by Niamh Briggs and Fiona Steed before the teams split and competitions started. Everyone was a winner and none more so than the game of rugby. Bruff RFC thanked all that came and supported the day; coaches of all the teams and the mums and dads,
Bruff RFC has had a girls section since 2014. At present the girls train with the boys at U-9 and U-10 and come together for tournaments. There is recognised U-12/13 and U-15 teams. It is hoped that next year they will put out the full complement of girls teams in the restructured age ranges U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16, U-18.
Coaching staff are organising eight weeks of “give it a try” sessions starting on June 4.

Hopefully Willie Conway will also be smiling this Saturday after the senior team play Bandon.
