GARDAI in Limerick are warning about a phone scam that has come to light in recent weeks.

As part of the scam a person gets a phone call from “out of the blue” from someone claiming to be from their bank.

“In this scam the caller advises the person that their new credit or debit card is in the post and that they should post their old one to a particular address,” said a garda spokesperson.

“Clearly this is their attempt to get the card and therefore the details from the person and make purchases. It could be quite a while before the card owner realises that their card has been used without their permission and a lot of their cash could be gone,” added the spokesperson.

Anybody who receives such a phone call is advised not engage with the caller. They should also inform their local garda station if they are contacted.
