GARDAI in Limerick are warning people to be vigilant with their property when out and about following a number of recent thefts.

In one incident a woman who was standing in a crowd at a match put her handbag at her feet only to discover was stolen a short time later.

“When she went to pick it up again it had been taken. This will give you an idea of how a thief will take the opportunity if they see it and how fast they are. Nobody in the crowd saw the bag being taken,” said Sgt Ber Leetch.

“It just shows how careful we must be with our property but especially ladies and their handbags,” she added.

In another incident an American tourist left her handbag unattended for a moment and her wallet

“Again these criminals are very fast and it’s best to keep your handbag with you at all times or wear it across your body,” said Sgt Leetch.

A man has been charged and is before the courts.
