GARDAI are appealing to women to be vigilant with their handbags when out and about in Limerick city.

It follows a theft incident last Saturday afternoon outside a café in the city centre.

“A lady was sitting outside the café enjoying a coffee and around 4.40pm. She had put her handbag at her feet but when she was ready to pay for her coffee and leave the premises she discovered that her handbag was gone,” said Sergeant Ber Leetch.

“When you’re out and about you must be aware of where your handbag is at all times. Keep it on your lap or wear a cross body bag and continue to keep it across you when you’re seated.

"These thieves are very fast and don’t draw attention to themselves so it’s very important that you protect your property,” added the divisional crime prevention officer.
