A big gathering turned out in Abbeyfeale to launch the Remembering Zoe events for 2018, which take place in memory of Zoe Scanlan, who died in June 2014
FOUR years after her tragic death, Zoe Scanlan’s smiling, happy face and sunny, outgoing personality have not been forgotten by the people of Abbeyfeale or indeed by many people in neighbouring parishes also.
Zoe died in June 2014, following a traffic accident while on holiday in West Cork. She was just eight years old.
Every year since, Zoe has been the inspiration for a series of events which have raised almost €65,000 for child-related charities.
“The support we have got over the years has made a real difference to children’s lives,” John Collins, a member of the organising committee said at the launch of this year’s appeal and where they pledged to continue the huge effort of the past three years.
It started at the weekend with a bucket collection in Abbeyfeale and will continue over two weekends next month.
This year’s 4th Annual Remembering Zoe Cycle Challenge will take place on Sunday, May 13. The event is organised in association with Abbeyfeale Cycling Club and three routes have been designed to take cyclists through the rolling hills and countrside of West Limerick, North Kerry and North Cork. The level of challenge is down to each individual cyclist, with a choice of 50km, 85km and 120km. This year, the Remembering Zoe committee has added a new event, an inaugural 5km Fun Run/Walk which promises to be a big, family-friendly attraction as well as an invitation to those not too keen on cycling.
Registration for these events is now open and can be done online. This year’s beneficiaries will be Nano Nagle Listowel, Brothers of Charity Newcastle West and Fr. Casey’s Bord na nÓg Girls and Boys. To register go to https://register.primoevents. com/ps/event/Remembering ZoeCycleChallenge2018.
