THREE new road bridges as part of the Limerick to Foynes freight line have now been completed and these will fast track the Adare bypass.

The much anticipated bypass is part of the Limerick to Foynes road scheme.

The three bridges took 14 months to complete and represent an investment of €13 million.

The bridges will provide safe crossing points for the future construction traffic involved in the major project between Limerick City and County Council and Iarnród Éireann.

Limerick City and County Council acknowledged the efforts of contractor John Cradock Ltd completing the bridges to a high standard.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, said: “The early completion of the three strategic bridges is a major step forward, and it gives confidence that the reinstatement of freight rail and the construction of the road scheme are both moving in the right direction.”

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Councillor Catherine Slattery, said: “The Foynes to Limerick road scheme, including the Adare bypass, is about unlocking opportunities for businesses, improving quality of life for residents, and making our region more accessible. The reinstatement of the Foynes rail line adds another dimension, supporting sustainable freight transport for Foynes Port and reducing pressure on our roads.”

Patricia Liddy, director of Transportation, Mobility and Placemaking at Limerick City and County Council added: “The Foynes to Limerick road scheme, including Adare bypass will transform connectivity across the Mid-West, reducing congestion, improving safety, and supporting economic growth. The collaborative approach with Iarnród Éireann has had mutual benefits for both organisations and is a model we are keen to replicate in the future, should the opportunity arise.”

The project will see the reintroduction of the freight line between Limerick and Foynes, which has not been used since 2001.

The €151.5 million investment will see the 42km of railway between the city and Foynes Port back in use. It's expected to be completed by October of 2026.
