A SERIOUS accident near a pedestrian crossing on Corbally Road has prompted a Limerick City north councillor to call for increased safety measures.

Councillor Pádraigh Reale said that urgent action is needed at the crossing near Athlunkard bridge.

“This crossing which provides a key link between the Shannon Fields walkway and the Red Path walkway is dangerous with cars approaching at speed and not stopping in time for pedestrians.

“We had a serious accident on this bridge in the last week and this is not the first time there has been an incident at this crossing,” Cllr Reale said.

He added that traffic needs to be controlled and slowed down, in order to make the area safer for pedestrians, in an area which experiences a high level of pedestrian footfall due to local schools.

“Something needs to be put in place to slow traffic on the approach to and at this pedestrian crossing. Funding must be sought from the National Transport Authority for a safety scheme at this location,” Cllr Reale said.

He stressed that the design guidelines in national policy put pedestrians first, but this is not the case in this area on Corbally Road.
