Labour picks sitting councillor to run in Limerick City constituency at general election

LABOUR has selected councillor Conor Sheehan to run in the next general election.

The Corbally man, who came within 15 votes of topping the poll on the northside at the local election, said it is “the honour of my life” to be selected to run for the party.

“I will work night and day to ensure that we earn the trust of the people of Limerick. Politics can be a force for good and I will prove that by deed and not just words,” Cllr Sheehan said.

The Labour man, who also ran in the mayoral election, will be hoping to recapture the seat held by his party until 2020 when former Education Minister Jan O’Sullivan missed out.

He was nominated by his party at a selection convention at The Absolute Hotel in the city centre. His party colleague, Cllr Elena Secas of City East also contested the convention.

Voters must go to the polls by March next year, with many observers expecting Taoiseach Simon Harris to announce an election in October or November.

Addressing party members, Cllr Sheehan said: "I am a doer and not a shouter. I know we can and we will do better. I saw that first hand during my years working for Jan O’Sullivan, the difference having a Labour TD made, having someone who truly cared about people and not just votes."

"There is so much work to be done. We need change and a return of politics to public service. Public service is an enormous privilege and politics can be a force for good and I will show that by deed and not just words," he concluded.
