Tributes pour in for footballer and school teacher killed in Sligo crash

TRIBUTES have been pouring in for a former Limerick student and school teacher who was killed in a collision in Co Sligo over the weekend.

James McNeive from Churchfield, Knock, Co Mayo, tragically died on Sunday, August 4.

The 28-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, after the van he was driving collided with a lorry on the N15 at Urlar, Drumcliffe.

The young man was a former student of Mary Immaculate College (MIC). He played GAA for the Aghamore senior team and worked as a primary school teacher at Gortskehy National School in Hollymount, Co Mayo.

Since the tragic news broke in, tributes have been pouring in for James, who has been described as a great friend to "anyone that knew him" and an "inspiring teacher".

"My heartfelt condolences to James’s family, friends and colleagues on your heartbreaking loss. I met James during my time in Mary I and we crossed paths again in Dublin. He was a gent and always the best of craic. I hope you all find the strength to get you through this terrible time and that your time with James has left a trail of beautiful memories that may give you some comfort in the days ahead. May James rest in peace," paid someone in tribute.
"Sincerest condolences to James’ family, friends and school community on the passing of James. James always made everyone laugh and was a great classmate and friend to everyone that knew him in MIC. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis," paid a friend in tribute. 
"We are utterly heartbroken to hear this tragic news. Mr McNieve was an inspiring teacher in Glasnevin National School and was adored by all the kids. He always encouraged them, inspired them and brought the spirit of sport alive in the school. He will be deeply missed by our son Jack. Our sincerest sympathies to all the McNieve family and friends at this very difficult time. The Furlong Family," wrote the parent of one of James' pupil in tribute.

Predeceased by his father Pete, his grandparents Joe and Mary Sweeney and Peter & Nora McNeive, aunts Roseanne and Cáit.

Sadly and lovingly missed by his heartbroken mother Bernadette; his sister Fiona and her husband Barry; brothers Michael, Matthew and Peter jnr.; girlfriend Catherine Carr; his nieces Beth, Sally and Jane and his nephew Noah; aunts Mary, Noreen, Trish and Kate Sweeney; Patricia, Noreca and Monnie McNeive; uncles Pat, Michael, Sean and Kevin Sweeney, Joe Egan and John McNeive; his beloved cousins, extended Sweeney & McNeive family; his team-mates, neighbours and many friends.
