A CHARITY kayaking event is taking place in Limerick next month in aid of Rape Crisis Mid-West.
This is the ninth year of the annual charity paddle, which raises funds and awareness for the organisation that provides much needed services to people in the region.

The event takes place on Saturday, August 17 and starts from Shannon Rowing Club, Annacotty at 1:30pm.

It is expected that the kayakers will arrive in Limerick city at 4:30pm at the public slipway beside St. Michael's Rowing Club in Limerick city.

Over 100 people took part in last year's event which always brings plenty of spectators along the route to cheer them on.

The event is open to beginners and those with little paddling experience.

The organisers will also be holding a two-day intro to kayaking course in Castleconnell on July 27 and August 3 for those wishing to get more comfortable with the water before the event.

Details on how to sign up for the course and event can be found here.

The paddle is run by the Limerick Kayaking Academy and was started in 2016 by local kayaker Dan O’Sullivan.

The route is predominantly flat with a number of small features but paddlers will be accompanied the whole way by Canoeing Ireland recognised kayak instructors.

Kayakers and instructors from across the country will be taking part in the fundraiser and will involve people from various organisations including Limerick Scout groups, Limerick 20/30, Canoeing Ireland and Kilfinane Outdoor Education Training Centre.

Volunteers from My Next Adventure, Killaloe, Munster Kayaking Adventures, Limerick Suicide Watch, Limerick Kayak Club, Shannon Rowing Club and Limerick Sports Partnership will also be attending.

Rape Crisis Mid-West provide a number of support services to survivors of rape and sexual assault.
