WE have reached the final countdown to three elections in Limerick, one of which will see history made.

Locally, voters will determine which of the 90 candidates will fill the 40 seats in Limerick City and County Council.

In terms of the European stage, the Limerick electorate will vote on the 23 candidates who are to contest the election for the European Parliament in the Ireland South constituency.

And, of course, on June 7, the people of Limerick city and county - unlike the rest of the country - will have a third vote, they will vote in a landmark election to decide who the inaugural directly elected mayor of Limerick will be.

In what is a first for Limerick, and indeed Ireland, the people of Limerick will elect a mayor - from 15 candidates - through a direct vote.

This historic election will decide who will lead on critical matters that affect each and everyone of us including the annual budget for Limerick and a housing strategy for the city and county.
