The sites for each of the shelters are already being assessed.

Mayor Gerald Mitchell said: “Last year’s rollout of bus shelters in both rural and urban areas of Limerick was a huge success. These shelters are a vital resource for many communities as people look to avail of enhanced local public transport services, in line with local and national transport policy.

“Limerick is continuing to upgrade and enhance its transport infrastructure at a pace and a standard that is of the envy to many other areas across the country.”

Senior engineer with the active travel team, Sean McGlynn said: “We’re aware of the significant demand that is still there within many communities across Limerick city and county for more bus shelters.

“It is a particularly significant announcement for county Limerick, with around €500,000 of the allocation to be spent in the county alone.

“Many towns and villages will now have shelters on stream before the end of the year.”

There will be seven in the Adare-Rathkeale municipal district (Loughill, Shanagolden, Askeaton, Reens Pike, square in Rathkeale, Ballyneety and Foynes).

There will be six in the Newcastle West area (Templeglantine, Newcastle West, two in Devon Cross and two in Abbeyfeale).

The Cappamore-Kilmallock area will have seven new bus shelters (Knocklong, Galbally, Murroe, Ballylanders, Herbertstown, Cappamore, and Doon).

The metropolitan area of the city will get eleven new shelters (Caherdavin Church, O’Connell Avenue, New Road, Garryowen, Mulcair Road, Childers Road, Clancy Strand, Drombanna, Ballysimon Road, two in Castleconnell and Dublin Road).
