The Crescent Shopping Centre
TESCO Ireland has secured conditional planning permission to expand its trading area at the Crescent Shopping Centre in Dooradoyle.
The retailer lodged papers with council planners earlier this year seeking to merge two units of its facility in the shopping centre.
On top of this, Tesco wants to bring a former creche facility, out of use for 15 years, back into regular service for retail.
The proposed developments includes the relocation of the alcohol sales area in the store.
In documents provided to council planners, representatives of Tesco Ireland said the plans are coming forward as part of an upgrade of the British retailer’s estate across the country.
This is being done to “provide an enhanced customer experience” and represents a “significant investment” at Crescent Shopping Centre.
The documents also add that the expansion will provide for a “more modernised and efficient convenience store”.
Tesco’s branch in Dooradoyle is the final store in the firm’s Irish estate yet to be refurbished.
Council planners afforded the project planning permission subject to one condition.
The news comes as the British retailer gears up to open its latest store in Limerick.

A new Tesco store is to open at Watch House Cross on the edge of the Moyross estate.
It takes over a unit which was formerly used by rival food retailers Iceland, and Eurospar.
According to the Tesco website, the store will officially open its doors at 8am on Thursday morning next.
It joins Tesco branches in the city at Coonagh Cross, Arthur’s Quay in the city centre, Roxboro Shopping Centre, the Crescent Shopping Centre in Dooradoyle and at Shannon Banks in Clare and Newcastle West.
