PICTURES: Team Limerick Clean-up encapsulated by a community

Neighbours working with neighbours, families working together, all filling bags

THE SCENES in Boher on Good Friday were reflected in communities across the city and county for Team Limerick Clean-Up.

The first of the enthusiastic team arrived at 8am. It was a lovely sunny morning and by 9am there were over 60 people gathered at Boher Community Centre to collect gloves, pickers, bags and signs before heading out around the roads of Boher.

There was activity on every road and every townland. Neighbours working with neighbours, families working together, all filling bags, all happy to be part of this great event. Young children with their parents had a great time collecting rubbish.

Pat O’Connell, chairman of Boher Community Development Association (CDA), said: "It was a great occasion for neighbours to meet each other and to work together”.

While he was driving around the roads collecting bags full of rubbish, he said, “To see the bright yellow jackets everywhere was great”.

Those who finished early set out again and helped those with heavier workloads. Others drove around in pick-up trucks, tractors and jeeps with trailers to load the bags, while bigger equipment was enlisted to remove heavier waste.

Everybody returned to Boher Community Centre to hot tea and coffee prepared by their wonderful catering committee. Later in the evening, Mr Binman’s lorry collected a large quantity of rubbish from Boher Community Centre.

"We would like to acknowledge Mr Binman for collecting both compactable and non-compactable waste so quickly," said Mr O'Connell.

Many Boher denizens, who could not be present on Friday, commenced their clean-up on Wednesday and Thursday, such was their commitment to this event.

"Boher CDA was delighted to be associated with JP McManus’ initiative and most grateful for the packs, which made a very difficult job a little easier," said Mr O'Connell.
