Limerick cancer survivor calls for Daffodil Day support

Bridget Carr was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2019

LIMERICK woman Bridget Carr, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2019, is calling on her local community to go all in against cancer for the Irish Cancer Society’s (ICS) Daffodil Day.

Daffodil Day takes place on Friday, March 22.

Bridget, from Cappamore, is encouraging anybody who has received a diagnosis to reach out for support and not go through cancer alone.

“My first port of call was the Irish Cancer Society Daffodil Centre in University Hospital Limerick. It was there where I got chatting with one of their nurses who was so helpful and she gave me a leaflet for OvaCare. It was through them that I first met other women who had ovarian cancer and I found that peer support and just talking to other people going through what you’re going through so invaluable,” Bridget said.

Since participating in an ICS research project, Bridget says she has “been bitten by the patient participation bug”. “Being involved in that research started me on a journey and since then, I’ve thrown myself into things because it is important that the patient’s voice gets heard”.

The ICS is there to ensure that every person affected by cancer has a place to turn to, the support they need and the hope that there will come a day when no one in Ireland dies from cancer.

“Thanks to the amazing generosity of the Irish public, the Irish Cancer Society invests in groundbreaking cancer research and delivers crucial free support services for people affected by cancer, throughout Limerick,” a spokesperson for the ICS said.

“In 2023, your generous support provided over 510 free lifts to bring Limerick-based cancer patients to their treatment, over 180 free counselling sessions to people living in Limerick; and almost 400 nights of free Night Nursing care to allow cancer patients in Limerick to die at home surrounded by loved ones,” the spokesperson added.
