Boost for Limerick city's northside as new café is approved

Boost for Limerick city as new café is approved

CITY PLANNERS have cleared the way for a new coffee shop at a shopping centre on the northside.

Better Value Unlimited Company, which shares a head office address with Dunnes Stores, had applied to Limerick City and County Council to develop at Jetland Shopping Centre.

Dunnes is the anchor tenant at the centre, located near TUS Gaelic Grounds. According to the planning application, two units at the shopping centre will merge into one to form a 525 square metre restaurant and cafe unit, with an external seating area.

Another unit in the shopping centre will change to an off-licence.

Council planners granted the development permission subject to a number of conditions, including that the outlet’s operating hours reflect the opening times of the centre.

Local Fine Gael councillor Olivia O’Sullivan said: “While we are well-served by our hotels out here, and have many fast food or takeaway outlets, there is a lack of cafe-restaurants in comparison to other sides of the city.”

She welcomed the opening of the new Applegreen outlet in Clondrinagh -which brings with it a branch of M&S Food - but added there are more opportunities for “a growing population.”
