Planning lodged to turn former Limerick bank into café

The old bank could get a new lease of life
A PLANNING application has been lodged to open a new café at the site of a former bank opposite TUS Gaelic Grounds.
AIB closed its outlet at Northtown Shopping Centre in Ennis Road on Limerick’s northside in the autumn of 2021.
Since then, the unit has lain idle.
But it could get a new lease of life, is plans put forward get the go-ahead from Limerick City and County Council.
M.S. O’Connell is seeking permission from the local authority to change the use of the unit from financial services to a licensed restaurant and café.
On top of this, alterations to the windows at the former bank are being sought, alongside other site works.
Local Fianna Fail TD Willie O’Dea was named by the developer a designated public representative on the application.
He said: “It’s preferable for an area to have some form of economic activity there rather than just a building. I think it will be a good facility to go with the other services in the area, and I’m sure it will be broadly welcomed.
“It’s in an area of high population and I’m sure it will be well-patronised,” he added.
When AIB closed, it meant the northside lost its last remaining bank branch as Bank of Ireland at Jetland Shopping Centre ceased trading in the same calendar year.
