A CARE centre in County Limerick has received three non-compliances out of a possible 17 regulations following an unannounced inspection by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA).

The inspection was conducted at Killeline Care Centre in Newcastle West on October 19, 2023 to monitor the provider's compliance with the Health Act 2007 (Care and Welfare of Residents in designated Centres for Older People) Regulations 2013 as amended.

According to the report which was published on February 6, 2024, inspectors found that the standard of care which was provided to residents living in the centre was of satisfactory quality and a number of non-compliances from previous inspections were addressed.

The three non-compliances fell under the capacity and capability, and quality and safety sections.

According to the HIQA report, each area inspected can fall under three categories, compliant, substantially compliant (generally meeting requirements), and not compliant.

The first non-compliance on the HIQA report fell under the Records category under the capacity and capability section.

As part of the inspection, a sample of staff duty rosters were reviewed and it was found that the information was incomplete and did not reflect the management hours worked.

Written Policies and Procedures under the same section were also deemed not compliant according to the HIQA report.

Overall, the premises were clean and well-maintained.

“However, there were areas where walls, skirting boards and door surfaces were in a poor state of repair. Inspectors also noted that safety grab rails were not in place in multiple resident bathrooms,” the report read.

The inspectors also spoke with a number of residents to get a further understanding of the quality of care at the centre. One resident asked the inspectors “where would you get comfort like this?” and all residents had high praise for the staff.

“Residents were observed to be content and relaxed in the company of staff and inspectors found that staff were knowledgeable of residents' care needs,” the report said.
