A MOTORIST who was driving without insurance because, he claimed, he had to tend to two horses which had broken out of a field, has been disqualified from driving for 10 years.

Mohd Qasim Hussain, aged 33, of Windsor Court, Castletroy View pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and driving without a driving licence on Main Street, Patrickswell on June 3, 2021.

Garda Aidan O’Gorman gave evidence at Newcastle West Court of stopping Mr Hussain on the date in question and making a demand for his driving licence and insurance details to be produced at a garda station of his choice.

The court heard Mr Hussain was disqualified at the time and has a number of previous convictions for motoring offences.

Michael O’Donnell, solicitor for Mr Hussain, said his client was driving while disqualified as he was told two horses had broken out of a field in Granagh.

“It’s not a great excuse,” said Mr O’Donnell.

Judge Carol Anne Coolican disqualified Mr Hussain from driving for 10 years and fined him €1,000 for driving without insurance. The judge fined Mr Hussain €250 for driving without a driving licence.
