VEHICLES have collided with a Limerick man’s fence six times in the last five years due to icy conditions in winter.

Mark Murphy from Fedamore has voiced his dismay at the issue as he is often left to foot the bill as those who cause the damage tend to drive off.

“They will be driving fast in icy conditions coming around the corner near my house, they break on the ice and head straight into my fence,” Mr Murphy said.

“There’s a stone ditch there which was hit about three years ago, I have since repaired it. There is also a sign pointing in the direction of Fedamore that has been hit also, the latest crash last December knocked that down and at the moment, they have replaced the pillar but the sign is not yet in place,” he added.

Mr Murphy said he has contacted Limerick City and County Council for a solution to the problem last week and hopes a barrier could be put in place to stop people crashing onto his land.

“Unless I catch the person who did the damage, I have to go and do it myself. There is beech hedging in place there for about 15 years. Trying to replace trees that age is difficult,” he said.

Mr Murphy said that last December, a man with a van breached the fence, luckily the man was uninjured and he ended up patching up the fence for him.

“One of the cars went straight through it and into the field. There’s a wooden rail, and then a beech fence inside it, and then you have an electric fence because we have horses in the field.

“Some of the horses ended up on the road last Saturday night because there is a big hole in the fence,” he added.

Limerick City and County Council has been contacted for a response.
