ROBERT Lee Mulcahy, a Limerick native, originally from the North Circular Road, was invited to be invested as a commander of the military and hospitaller order of Saint Lazarus, at a ceremony at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin on November 25.
The Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem, named after its patron saint, is an ecumenical and chivalrous Order of Knighthood, a Christian military order founded by the Crusaders around 1119, at a leper hospital in Jerusalem, whose care became its original purpose.
In 1154, King Louis VII of France granted the Order of Saint Lazarus a property at Boigny, near Orléans, France, which became the headquarters of the Order, outside of the Holy Land.
With no representative in Ireland, Lord Dunsany, Randal Arthur Henry Plunkett, 19th Baron of Dunsany, led the establishment of the Order in Ireland.
On the September 21 1962 the official inauguration of the Order took place at Dunsany Castle, Co. Meath, when Lord Dunsany was invested as the first Chancellor of the order in Ireland.
Lord and Lady Dunsany subsequently funded the decoration of the Chapel of St Stephen at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, as the order’s chapel in Ireland.
Robert Lee Mulcahy, who spends his time between Ireland, France & Monaco and with a background in the arts and hospitality has spent over 25 years supporting a wide number of charitable and important causes, from VSO Ireland to mentoring emerging artists.
In 2022 Robert initiated the now annual fundraising dinner in Monaco, benefiting The Atlantic Youth Trust.
This is in addition to producing the Monaco and Ireland Young Chef and Young Waiter competitions and awards ceremonies.
YCYW is an initiative to celebrate & award young professionals and to attract more to join the hospitality sector.
Members of the Order of St Lazarus are expected to promote the hospitaller, ecumenical, and other works of the order.
In particular, Members are obliged to fulfil the tenants of chivalry by protecting the weak, helping the sick and promoting justice.
A solemn undertaking to maintain the obligations of the order is made by each member before God and the assembled congregation, on formal investiture.
Commenting on the investiture as a Commander, Robert Lee Mulcahy confirmed that ‘It is a great privilege to have been selected for this acknowledgement and I very much look forward to giving support to the Order and to the charities and causes it supports”.
