LIMERICK businessman JP McManus has been spotted on the course of the Ryder Cup in Rome with a well-known sports star - former professional footballer Gareth Bale.

The Ryder Cup which is taking place at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, got under way this Friday morning with the  foursomes.

It continues until Sunday afternoon.

While Mr McManus will be keeping a keen eye on the European team - which features Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy - he will also be watching closely how the Italians stage such a major event. Adare Manor, which is owned by Mr McManus and his wife Noreen, will host the 2027 Ryder Cup.

Photographs taken in Rome this Friday morning show JP McManus, who has 'inside the ropes' accreditation, decked out in an Adare Manor-branded hat and jacket.

He was snapped by photographers walking along the course with Welsh former professional footballer Gareth Bale who played as a winger, most notably for Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid.

Only last July, the legendary footballer, who is also a keen golfer, was in Adare  - he was photographed at the Dunraven Arms Hotel while travelling with a group from Carr Golf.

Posing for a photo with Hugh Murphy, General Manager of the Dunraven Arms Hotel, a member of the hotel's group posted to social media: "Delighted to welcome Gareth Bale and his golf group to stay with us."

In 2025, golf’s preeminent event heads to the world-renowned Black Course at Bethpage State Park in New York.
