FIRE crews tackled a fire at the University of Limerick on Tuesday evening.

Four crews from Limerick City Fire Service and one from Killaloe Fire Station attended the incident at Cappavilla Village, student accommodation located on the northside of the campus.

The apartment fire was located on a second floor balcony with crews arriving at 5:16pm to deal with the fire.

The building block was evacuated and remained closed for the night with crews departing the scene at 7:50pm.

No injuries have been reported in the fire.

UL confirmed the incident in a statement: "Village staff acted immediately to evacuate students and call emergency services. All students have been safeguarded and thankfully there were no injuries.

"A full investigation into the incident will be conducted by UL. A damage assessment will be carried out and any students affected will have their accommodation relocated in the interim."
