SPORTING bodies have paid tribute to the late Michael Wallace.
A former Irish Olympic Sailing Team Manager, Wallace was a familiar face on the sidelines of rugby fields across Limerick - sons Richard, David and Paul all progressed through the schools and club scene to play with Ireland.
Michael of Crosshaven, Cork , originally Monkstown, Cork, was buried this Thursday September 7 in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Crosshaven after Requiem Mass at St Brigid’s Church Crosshaven.
Michael managed the Irish team for over a decade which saw many victories including Ireland’s first yachting medal in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.
Michael, beloved husband of Greta and dear father of Henry, Richard, Paul and David, brother of the late Harry, is sadly missed by his loving family, grandchildren Ben, Andrew, Harvey, Julia-Rose, Olympia, Freddie, Michael, Patrick and Harry, daughters-in-law Barbara, Sylvia, Elaine and Aileen, brother John, sisters-in-law Maeve and Betty, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Dr Jim Fehily, President Garryowen Football Club said: "Sincere sympathy to Greta, Henry, Richard, Paul and David on the sad passing of Michael. He was a well known figure to many at Dooradoyle over the years as a proud father watching his sons playing for Garryowen. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilis."
Also on RIP.ie Young Munster RFC sent their condolences to the family saying:"Our deepest condolences to Greta, Henry, Richard, Paul, David and extended members of Wallace Family on the sad passing Michael, husband, father, grandfather. May Michael's gentle soul rest in peace. Ar dheas de go raibh a anam dilis. President, Officers and Members."
John Callanan of Commodore Killaloe Sailing Club also paid tribute online: "On behalf of Killaloe Sailing Club, we would like to express our sincere condolences to the Wallace family at this sad time. Michael was a former Commodore of Killaloe Sailing Club and a stalwart of the club in the early days on Lough Derg. He will be sadly missed."
Michael was a dedicated sailor a member of the Royal Cork Yacht Club at Crosshaven and a former Monkstown Bay Sailing Club (MBSC) Commodore in Cork Harbour.
