New railings close the river gap in Limerick city

New railings have been installed at Steamboat Quay in the city

CONTRACTORS have completed the installation of railings along the entirety of one of Limerick's quays after safety concerns were raised.

Most of Steamboat Quay, adjacent to the Clayton Hotel in the city centre had railings, but there was a small portion just beside the Mount Kennett Skate Park which did not. Until now.

Council put in place Sorenson Civil Engineers to erect new railings, which took a month to do.

The move has been welcomed by metropolitan district leader, Cllr Azad Talukder, who lives closeby.

He said: “The area looks beautiful now. I've had a lot of contact from residents, and they are very happy with it. It's given the area a lift for tourists too.”

For many people living in the nearby apartment complexes, the bank of the river has become a de-facto front garden, sparking calls for the section open to the river to be railed off.
