STAFF of one of the city centre’s most well-known bookshops have been honoured by Limerick Tidy Towns.
The group has afforded its fourth bi-monthly award for 2023 to O’Mahony’s Bookshop located in the heart of O’Connell Street.
Maura O’Neill of Tidy Towns said they were impressed by the fact that workers at the bookshop continuously maintain a beautifully presented exterior.
“Throughout many changes to our city centre over the past 120 years, not least the huge redevelopment that has recently been completed on O’Connell Street, O’Mahony’s Booksellers, one of Limerick’s best known and most beloved businesses has continued to thrive. It has diverse, imaginative window displays and attractive flowerbeds at the entrance. It is a great asset to our city centre, and we are delighted to present our latest bi-monthly award to them,” she said.
The bookshop was founded in 1902 by JP O’Mahony, the grandfather of the current owner Frank.
It’s continued to trade from the same location and is one of the oldest retail businesses of its type in the region.
A family business, O’Mahony’s is one of the largest independent book-sellers in the country.
It becomes Limerick City Tidy Town’s fourth winner of 2023, since they switched to bi-monthly awards this year.
It will as a result be in with a chance to be their overall winner for 2023 at next year’s annual event.
They will stand alongside the January-February winner Dolans, March-April winner Rift Café and May-June winner The Flower Studio
If you wish to nominate a business in the city for an award or volunteer with Limerick City Tidy Towns, they meet every Sunday morning at 11am at the corner of Thomas Street and O’Connell Street, and on Wednesday evenings at 6pm outside the White House during summer months.
