CASTLECONNELL Tidy Towns have come out on top of their group for the second year in a row.

The Tidy Towns group now advance straight through to the grand final of the Going for Gold competition that takes place later this year.

Athea, Ballingarry, Broadford, Caherconlish and Caherdavin who didn’t make it out of the second round of the competition are still in the chance of a place in the all-important final as judges will be selecting wildcards following the initial rounds of Going for Gold.

Castleconnell’s consistent cleaning, maintenance and new additions to the town have seen them selected as the public's choice in the second round of Going for Gold Tidy Towns category.

The groups conversion of a dead tree on a popular nature walk into an owl statue by Will Fogarty from Hospital, their consistent weeding of local roads and estates, teaching of local school children how to grow their own food and the repainting of light fixtures and fences in their local area are all reasons why Castleconnell were selected as last week’s winners.

There are three more weeks left in the initial round of the Going for Gold Tidy Towns competition which will see a further 18 community groups battle it out by discussing the reasons they deserve to win a cash prize of €10,000.

This week sees Askeaton, Ballinacurra Weston, Galbally, Glin, Rockhill/Bruree and Pallaskenry give their reasons as to why they should go forward to the final of the Going for Gold competition.
