New shopping complex planned for Limerick city

A render of what the development will look like

A BRAND new multi-storey shopping centre is planned as part of a major shake-up to a Limerick southside community.

A crèche, a coffee shop and five more retail units are being planned for a site on the edge of the Ros Mor estate at Kilmallock Road on the city’s southern exit.

On top of this, 15 new houses will be built on a patch of wasteland which will complete the estate.

The development has been hailed as “great news” for the area by councillor Catherine Slattery, who is based in the local community in question.

She explained that a new roundabout will shortly be built in the area which will pave the way for a much improved 30 minute bus service along Kilmallock Road and Old Cork Road.

“I'm glad the Old Cork Road is finally being linked to the rest of the city and there are finally some shop units which can be used to bring necessary infrastructure and services to the area,” she added.

The proposals, which are being delivered by Wexford-based developer Alice Kehoe, will see the new commercial centre visible from Kilmallock Road at the entrance to Ros Mor, with the 15 homes on land just within the estate.

John Redmond of Healy Partners, which has put together the designs on behalf of the developer said: “The whole idea is to try and get something commercial within that space. It’s a good distance away before you come across another shop, apart from the petrol station next door.”

Already approximately 30 homes have been built in the area, with permission in place for 50 overall.

Permission was already in place for a crèche within the estate, but under the new proposals, this will be moved into the commercial centre, with the hope that it can serve a wider population once operational.

The 15 new homes will be split into four detached, eight semi-detached, and three terraced.

The retail centre will comprise of two buildings, which will climb two-storeys.

Having indicated their intention to apply through an advert in the Limerick Leader, the developer now has a fortnight to lodge papers with council planners.
