The do not swim sign at Ballybunion Beach

SWIMMING is prohibited at Ballybunion until further notice, Kerry County Council have confirmed.

The decision was made following sampling of the water which showed elevated levels of bacteria in the water.

The prohibition of swimming has been placed on bathing and swimming at Ballybunion North and South beaches.

The cause of the elevation in bacteria is likely due to heavy rainfall over the last number of days/weeks causing diffuse pollution which is the release of potential pollutants which can have a significant effect on the water.

The swimming prohibition is expected to last three days and additional water samples will be taken.
