YOUNG Limerick city soccer stars have received a top civic honour to mark their historic national cup success.
City Hall was a sea of green jerseys as Mayor Francis Foley afforded a civic reception to the U12 team from southside club Pike Rovers.
The honour was bestowed on the young stars who defeated Dublin's St Kevin's to win the 2022 Schoolboys/Schoolgirls FAI Cup title.
Each player received a personal letter of congratulations from Limerick's first citizen at the reception, which was requested by councillor Frankie Daly.
Speaking following the ceremony, joint manager Dom Lipper said: “We had a fiv- year plan, but it came to the fore a lot faster than we thought. We've got a good bunch of kids, some very good players there. It made our job very easy.”
Joint-manager Frank Stewart revealed he has got a tattoo on his leg recognising the team: “It’s a fantastic achievement and one which won’t be forgotten”.
