Limerick publicans want a clear run at Munster hurling final day by opening at breakfast

The Limerick Licensed Vintners Association is to seek an "exemption for a special event" on Munster final day

LIMERICK publicans are seeking permission to serve some early-morning pints and shots to thirsty hurling fans ahead of the Munster SHC final between Limerick and Clare.

The much-anticipated fixture - a repeat of last year's final - will take place at TUS Gaelic Grounds on Sunday, June 11 - with a throw-in time of 1.45pm.

In a public notice, published this Thursday, Robert Byrne Junior, chairman of the Limerick Licensed Vintners Association, has confirmed he intends seeking an "exemption for a special event" under the provisions of the Intoxicating Liquor Act.

The application is due to be made before a judge at Limerick District Court next week and, if granted, it will allow license-holders in the "county Borough of Limerick and the surrounding built up areas" to open from 9am on the day of the final rather than the usual 12.30pm.

The application, which was lodged by legal firm Sweeney McGann LLP on Wednesday, will also seek an exemption to allow publicans in the locality to open later on Sunday night - until 1am rather than the usual 11pm.

Similar exemptions have been granted other sporting events in the past - most notably in 2010 when Munster Rugby played Leinster at Thomond Park on Good Friday.

It is understood any exemption for June 11 will apply to around 100 licensed premises.
