Man arrested following fight in Limerick town blamed ‘a lack of sleep’ for his actions

‘A lack of sleep’ given as a reason for Limerick accused’s actions

A MAN who had a lack of sleep “gave as much abuse as he received”, Newcastle West Court heard.

John McKenna, aged 37, of Cois na Feile, Abbeyfeale pleaded guilty to using threatening / abusive / insulting behaviour on August 12, 2022.

Inspector Gearoid Thompson, prosecuting, said gardai responded to a fight at Cois na Feile, Clash Road, Abbeyfeale.

“There were a number of persons present including minors. Words were exchanged. He chose to get involved. Adult and juvenile cautions were issued,” said Insp Thompson.

The inspector said that Mr McKenna, who has a number of previous convictions including for violent disorder and robbery, was not suitable for an adult caution.

Michael O’Donnell, solicitor for the accused, said his client had worked a night shift.

“It happened outside his house. A young girl came in to him who was upset. He had a lack of sleep. He did give as much abuse as he received. Unfortunately he is not suitable for an adult caution,” said Mr O’Donnell.

Judge Carol Anne Coolican asked the Probation Service to prepare a report on Mr McKenna’s suitability for community service.
