Confusion over maintenance of Limerick's greenway routes addressed

Issue over maintenance of Limerick's greenway routes addressed

Cllr Sean Hartigan sought information on the greenway link between the city centre and University of Limerick

COUNCIL has moved to clarify which departments are responsible for maintaining the miles of greenway paths across Limerick.

A meeting has taken place between bosses in the local authority's roads department, and its environment, recreation and climate change department to discuss the upkeep of the greenways in Limerick.

Senior executive engineer in the local authority's roads department Mike Richardson stated: "It has been agreed the roads department will maintain any of the roads and infrastructural elements and the parks section will maintain the greens, hedges and recreational elements of these greenways."

The works will be funded out of the current budgets and carried out by council staff, or contractors where specialist works are required.

This will be reviewed further next year, Mr Richardson said.

The information came to light following a question to this month's metropolitan meeting from Green party councillor Sean Hartigan.

He had asked what department is responsible for maintaining the smarter travel path linking Lock Quay, Corbally and the boat club in University of Limerick.
