A FREE car seat checking service is back on the road to warn people about the consequences of what can occur when a child’s car seat is incorrectly fitted.

According to the Road Safety Authority, more than half of child car seats checked as part of their Check it Fits service are incorrectly fitted and needed some type of adjustment to make them a safe fit.

With their face-to-face child car seat checking service, Check it Fits, the RSA will visit locations across Limerick this week - on  Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The service will be available daily between 10am and 5.30pm and is free of charge.

On Tuesday, it will take place at Smyths Toys at the Parkway Retail Park; on Wednesday at Tesco in Newcastle West and on Thursday at ALDI, Childers Road in the city.

The RSA says it has found that almost a third of seats fitted incorrectly needed major adjustments. To help address this problem, this service will help parents to ensure that car seats and restraints are correctly fitted.

Senior Road Safety Promotion Officer for the RSA, Aisling Sloyan, commented: “While the RSA’s experience with its Check it Fits service shows that half of child car seats are fitted incorrectly, worryingly, it found that 30% of these needed a major adjustment to fix them”.
