In Pictures: 100th birthday party full of craic and ceol for Limerick woman Peig

PEIG Ryan had no problem blowing out all the candles on her centenary birthday cake due to her mastery of the flute.

She was joined by many friends, family and musicians in Hayes’ pub, Cappamore, to celebrate her 100th birthday.

Peig is known by musicians far and wide after being instrumental in founding the Murroe branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in 1972, which now bears her name.

Many musicians trace their talent to Peig’s nurturing and guidance. Peig’s musical ability is reflected in her mastery of the flute, whistle and concertina and in her ability to sing and write music, songs and poetry.

Peig’s daughter, Mairead Ryan, spoke on behalf of family and friends at the party and recalled with fondness her late sister Theo and father Mick Ryan.

“On behalf of mam’s sister Marie and my brothers Paudie, Mike, Gerard and families including grandchildren and great grandchildren, we thank you all so much for being here tonight.

“It is so appropriate that we are having this 100th birthday celebration in Hayes’ pub, as our late grandfather, Patrick Carbery, a well-known baker and musician had his bakery at the back of this pub many years ago,” said Mairead.

Peig’s proud daughter said the number of people present is testimony to the “fantastic legacy of love for traditional music and people that mammy continues to have”.

“On behalf of all of us mam, we thank you for the fabulous memories, love and joy you continue to give us all,” concluded Mairead.

The craic, ceol and chats continued late into the night as Peig enjoyed regaling stories with many family and friends.

Happy 100th to a great lady!
