Limerick man lifts the Liam MacCarthy cup, 50 years on

A MAN WHO last lifted the Liam MacCarthy cup 50 years ago got his hands on it again in an unexpected way!

It came after hurling’s holy grail visited his local Men’s Shed.

Joe Foster, a member of the Dooradoyle-Raheen Men’s Shed, reminisced that he last triumphantly held the Liam MacCarthy cup in Croke Park after Limerick's win over Kilkenny in 1973.

Described as a “memorable day”, the trophy which was won by the Limerick senior hurling team for the third time in four years last July landed in the local Men’s Shed, which provides a space for local men to come together.

Limerick were again victorious over Derek Lyng’s side on Easter Day, this time in the league.

Days earlier, the cup made its way to St Nessan's Road in Dooradoyle for a night of song and entertainment.

Sean Dalton, who co-founded the Dooradoyle Men’s Shed said: “Kevin Barry and Ger Lawlor and a few invited guest singers provided the entertainment on what was a memorable day.

“Our shed has now linked with the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board, providing courses in genealogy, IT and yoga. We also have an active woodcarving class and we are open four days a week,” he said.
