Bryan, Kate and Yagoda Fitzsimons outside Skehans Free House in London
A LIMERICK man's pub, Skehans Free House, has been named the Best Pub in London.
The traditional bar is run by Bryan Fitzsimons from Foynes whose Dad ran The Shannon House before moving to the UK in 1994 to open The Faltering Fullback in Finsbury Park.
Speaking to the Limerick Leader about his bar, Bryan said that “we try keep it as a pub but we wouldn't be heavy into the Irish thing. We do Irish hospitality and we show all the Irish games but there's something for everyone”.
The Limerick man lives above the premises with his wife Kate and daughter Yagoda and revealed what makes his pub so special: “we just treat it like our home” adding that “the commute is easy down the stairs”.
The family run pub serves the typical Sunday roasts, a firm favourite with people living in the UK, as well as music five nights a week.
When Bryan first moved over, he lived in Battersea in the South of the City before moving North, where the Fullback is located, and seven years ago he returned to the South to run Skehans.
While the nod from Time Out magazine is impressive, there is another accolade that is hugely regarded in London and that is a Guinness rating from the infamous social media account Shit London Guinness.
Corkman Ian Ryan is the founder of the Instagram page (240k followers) and he paid a visit to the South East bar to test the stout for himself.
“He said we were one of the best. He said the Fullback was the best in London, which would be my brother's pub but he said we were close to a second,” Bryan explained to the Limerick Leader while on holiday in Portugal.
While he is busy running the ‘Best Pub in London’, the father of one tries to come home as much as possible adding when he is away from Foynes what he misses most is “the pubs” and “the food”.
“I think the food is way better at home, just fresh food, like nice steaks and things like that”, he added.
