Limerick thieves targeting cars for 'easy to steal' component

Toyota

GARDAI have warned that thieves in Limerick are targeting cars for their catalytic converters.

A number of Toyota Prius cars have been targeted in the last week with the components stolen from vehicles in Newcastle West, Adare and Kildimo.

Sergeant Ber Leetch, Crime Prevention Officer at Henry Street Garda Station said the components are targeted because they are easier and quicker to remove from the Prius model of car.

"If you are the owner of a Prius you need to take extra steps to protect it so park it as close to your house as possible, ideally in a garage.

"If there are two or more car owners in the house, park the Prius tight behind another car.

"Park in a well lit up area and as the criminals have to jack the car up to get access to the convertor, try to park it in a way that would make it very difficult or impossible to raise."
