Over €290,000 in funding allocated to Limerick heritage projects

OVER €290,000 in funding has been allocated to Limerick built heritage projects provided under the Historic Structures Fund 2023.

A total of 95 heritage projects across the country will benefit from a total of €4.5m under this year’s Historic Structures Fund, with €296,500 being awarded to six projects in Limerick.

The scheme provides assistance to a wide range of heritage structures, including castles, churches, mills, bridges, shopfronts, and thatch structures, as well as to private houses. 

Turner Vinery, South Hill House has received funding of €80,000 (with an additional €80,000 proposed for 2024) for conservation/restoration of the masonry structure, restoration/assembly of metal work, and manufacture/installation of glazing.

Funding of €86,000 (with an additional €86,000 proposed for 2024) has been awarded to Goggin Cottage, Kildimo to complete the conservation of Goggin Cottage bringing back into use a previously uninhabitable heritage cottage and giving it a sustainable new use as holiday accommodation.

Maura's Cottage, Lough Gur has been awarded funding of €42,0000 for works including the re-thatching of the existing roof which is in danger of imminent full collapse in accordance with best conservation practices and skills using traditional materials.

Russell's Mill, The Quay, Askeaton has received funding of €37,500 for significant roofing works, including a natural slate roof finish on felt and battens, on roofing timbers including rainwater goods and scaffolding.

Funding worth €27,500 has been allocated to Madden's, Turagh, Moore Street in Cappamore for repair works, including roof repair, chimney repairs, cast iron rainwater goods, repair of structural defects, removal of cement plaster and application of new lime plaster, and repair to the old shopfront.

3 Wolfe Tone Street, Kilmallock has received funding of €23,500 to allow for the re-roofing of the existing natural slate roof in accordance with best conservation practices and skills using traditional materials.

Minister of State for Local Government and Planning, Kieran O’Donnell TD, welcomed the announcement, stating: "This year’s Historic Structures Fund will assist owners and custodians of historic and protected structures across the country as they carry out hundreds of conservation projects to repair and safeguard our built heritage.

"Thanks to the close working relationship between the Department and the Local Authorities like Limerick City and County Council, in particular the Architectural Conservation Officers, Heritage Officers and planning and administrative staff, schemes such as the Historic Structures Fund continue to be successful in the repair and renewal of our shared built heritage."
