Matteo Jeanneau-Zoncada (Salesian College) and Cameron Rice and Vanessa Urban (Villiers School Limerick)
FITTING all the pieces together, three Limerick students have represented their schools in the national finals of the All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad (AILO) in Dublin City University.
Matteo Jeanneau-Zoncada, student in Salesian College, Pallaskenry with students Cameron Rice and Vanessa Urban from Villiers School, Limerick competed in solving puzzles that require logical thinking and the ability to think outside the box.
Run by ADAPT, the world-leading SFI Research Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology, the contest challenges secondary school students to apply logic and reasoning skills to solve complex puzzles in unfamiliar languages.
The four winners from the AILO will travel overseas to Bulgaria to represent Ireland at the International Linguistics Olympiad in July.
The 100 national finalists have successfully got through the preliminary rounds held in schools all over Ireland in January with more than 3,500 students registered for this year’s contest.
Students must analyse the language data they are given to work out the ‘rules’ of the new language. These transferable skills are critical in preparing young people for a wide range of careers in computing, linguistics and language.
The results of the National Final of the All Ireland Linguistics Olympiad are yet to be released and sample puzzles from the Olympiad can also be downloaded for practice and educational purposes.
