Limerick schools participate in art competition for Fairtrade Fortnight

STUDENTS from across Limerick took part in an art competition recently to promote Fairtrade Fortnight.

Fairtrade Fortnight is a two-week event where communities in Limerick and further afield show their support for the people that grow our food. The students designed posters with information regarding the two-week event.

Caoimhe Ryan from Milford National School achieved first place with a poster of the earth and the members of Fairtrade working together.

In second place came Castletroy College student Laura Morris with her poster that featured various Fairtrade products and facts.

Third place was awarded to Aisling Wardle of An Mhodhscoil and her poster was designed as Gaeilge featuring a farmer and Fairtrade products.

A special award for artistic merit was presented to Sophie Mae Culloty, student of Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh.

“I would like to congratulate everyone involved in the competition. All the pupils who participated across Limerick, their teachers and the Limerick Fairtrade group for their on-going volunteer efforts in support of Fairtrade.” said Mayor of Limerick Francis Foley.

Fairtrade International Ambassador, Innocent Owomuhangi, will be making an appearance in Limerick this year and will visit Mary Immaculate College, Newcastle West, and Bruff.

Regarding Fairtrade farmers, Chair of Limerick Fairtrade Comittee Dolores O'Meara said: “Some have been impacted by flooding, others by drought. . . They produce food items that we use every day – tea, coffee, cocoa, bananas – and they depend on us to purchase their products.”

One can help Fairtrade farmers by purchasing products with the Fairtrade logo.
