WORLD Book Day has gifted almost 3,000 books to Limerick children.

In a bid to encourage reading the charity teamed up with Children’s Books Ireland, Foras na Gaeilge, An Post and the National Council for the Blind of Ireland to make sure every child has access to books.

Speaking about the importance of this initiative Elaina Ryan, CEO, Children’s Books Ireland, said: “World Book Day’s mission to change lives through a love of books and reading couldn’t align more closely with our own here at Children’s Books Ireland.

“We want to see an Ireland in which every child is a reader, where every young person can experience the life-changing benefits that reading for fun can bring. We’re delighted to work with such brilliant partners to bring forward that vision this World Book Day, and can’t wait to see which of the fantastic World Book Day titles young readers in Ireland choose,” she added.

2,860 books have been delivered to charities in Limerick, including Doras, Every Child is Your Child, Novas and West Limerick Resources.

World Book Day was founded by UNESCO in 1995 and the first World Book Day took place in Ireland in 1997 with an aim to promote reading as a lifelong habit.
