NEW SOLAR-powered bins installed in Limerick city have gained attention online with many social media users pointing out one shortcoming, writes Faye Dorgan.
The bins, which form part of the €9.1m revamp investment of Limerick city centre, are powered by sunlight and are a tech-savvy instalment, in line with the environment and the city’s ongoing upgrade of infrastructure.
However, some people who have seen the new bins dotted around Limerick have taken to online platforms to point out that the waste disposers are not adequately signed or labelled.
In response to people’s concerns which have been voiced online, Limerick City and County Council made a comment in relation to the lack of signage.
They said: “These bins have been installed as part of the OCS (O'Connell Street) works.
“The installation of the bins is ongoing and the application of vinyls with a recycling logo will be applied to the front and side of the bin.”
The bins have solar-power compactors installed inside, which notifies the council when they are full and need to be emptied.
Social Democrats councillor, Elisa O’Donovan, said: “I was delighted to hear the new bins were to be installed this week.
“However, there has been mixed reviews of the colour and design, but I actually think they look quite well and when the signage is added it will be easier to differentiate between them.”
