Court president visits Limerick to listen to local stakeholders

THE President of the District Court says he will take on board the views of Limerick judges and other stakeholders when allocating resources in the future.

Judge Paul Kelly visisted the criminal courts complex at Mulgrave Street in the city last week where he met with members of the judiciary, Courts Service managers and other members of the Limerick Court Users Group.

During his visit to Limerick, Judge Kelly listened to the various views and discussions around the levels of business in the courts in Limerick and the associated matters which were raised.

In addition to presiding over cases, part of the president’s role is to allocate judges for special sittings of the district court in Limerick and across the country – to help keep the various lists and waiting times moving.

Commenting after the meeting, Judge Kelly said: “I am pleased to not only be in Limerick, but to actively listen to those of you who endeavour to make the justice system work in the area. There are undoubtedly great pressures of work in this and many other areas of the country. I regularly assess where best I can allocate any resources I have available to me for extra and special sittings. I hope to bring and use the information I’ve learned here today, to bear on future plans.”

During the meeting, Judge Patricia Harney outlined the efforts being made in Limerick to keep waiting times to a minimum and to create access to justice with the current resources.

She also spoke of the pressures currently on the system in Limerick and the levels of special sittings that she expects will be needed in the near future.
