€5 million allocated to planning and design of M20 Limerick to Cork motorway

A TOTAL of €5 million has been allocated to the planning and design of the M20 Limerick to Cork road project.

Eamon Ryan, Minister for Transport has announced a total of €26,690,901 in funding  for national roads and greenways in the county.

The funding for the M20 motorway is part of the TII’s objectives to deliver the key priorities in the National Development Plan.

Other projects that have received money under the funding include €2 million for the Beary’s Cross junction on the N24, the development of the Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale bypasses which get €1.45million each to continue the design and planning work, €1 million for the N21 in Abbeyfeale to Mountmahon along with other works on the N69 including Boland’s Cross which gets €500,000.

A further €2 million has been allocated to the N21/69 Limerick to Foynes (including Adare Bypass), with €1.45 million given to the N21 Newcastle West and N21 Abbeyfeale relief roads.

Minister of State Kieran O’Donnell said: "I am very pleased to see this €5 million in M20 funding announced today, I have campaigned strongly over the years for the M20 project because I believe enhancing the connectivity between Ireland’s second and third largest cities will bring vital synergies for both Limerick and Cork and indeed Ireland.

"This is another important step in reaching that goal.

"This further €5 million funding for the M20 is to continue with advancing planning and design of the M20 Cork to Limerick project with a view to achieving approval of its business case and making the application for its planning consent and land acquisition orders in the 2021-2025 period of the NDP.

"The commencement of main works construction, subject to approvals, is expected to commence in the 2026-2030 period of the NDP."
