NEW jobs are being created in Limerick as a high-tech firm expands its headcount across Ireland.
Viatel, which is headquartered in Dublin, and has its local base in Castletroy, has announced the creation of 50 new roles across the country over the next 18 months.
The company exists to link businesses and staff to the internet, offering secure connectivity, voice and cloud data.
Approximately one-third of the new positions are to be based in Limerick, where the firm was established following its acquisition of Action Point last year.
The jobs are projected to be spread around its base here, plus those in Blanchardstown and Dundalk.
Already, 120 people work for Viatel in the city. Nationally, 275 staff work for the company supporting over 5,000 enterprise customers.
Congratulations @ViatelEurope in Blanchardstown on the great news of 50 local jobs in the tech sector. It shows Ireland is open to investment, trade, talent & creativity. We are a country of opportunity where indigenous enterprise can flourish alongside international companies. https://t.co/8ipGYnFoGG

Recruitment is currently under way.
The announcement of the new roles was made by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar.
It comes with the group expanding its security portfolio, while continuing to grow its share of the domestic market.
Viatel Technology Group chief executive Paul Rellis said “Viatel is a great indigenous Irish tech success story. We have grown sustainably over the last 20 years, establishing ourselves as a go-to networking and digital services partner. Now, we are preparing to launch our new security platform. We have created the end-to-end, accessible, managed security solution that we see lacking in the market. The jobs announced today are coming online as a result of those plans. We are very excited about this potential growth area, and we are backing our plans by investing in the right people to help us bring our vision to life.”
